Wood Acoustic Panels in a Recording Studio: Where Beauty and Sound Are One Decision

There is a kind of space where every detail has consequences. Where a millimeter of the wrong material on a wall is audible in the recording. Where beauty and acoustics are not two separate decisions, but one.

A recording studio is the sharpest test any finishing material can face. There is no pretending here.

An acoustic panel either works, through absorption, diffraction and the geometry of its surface, or it does not. And if it does not, you hear it in every bar you record.

When echo becomes the enemy

The owner of a recording studio in Poland knew exactly what was troubling him. Echo. Reflections returning from the walls and working their way into every recording. A problem no post-production could fix, because it sat deeper: in the space itself.

But what he was looking for was not a sterile booth lined with grey foam. He was looking for a place where an artist wants to work. A space that sounds good and looks like a creative environment rather than a soundproofed closet.

That is exactly the point where our conversation begins.

HEXAGO and CARO MINUS: function and form in one composition

We proposed a composition that never separates function from form. HEXAGO acoustic wall panels in natural oak, with a precisely perforated surface that lets sound enter instead of bouncing back, took on the acoustic work. Beside them, CARO and CARO MINUS panels: organic, undulating, with a hand-polished surface that responds to light in a way no synthetic substitute can match.

The wall stopped being a problem to solve. It became the first thing an artist sees walking into the booth.

The result: audible and visible

Nine HEXAGO modules placed at the points identified by the acoustic engineers. Two and a half square meters of CARO MINUS, which brought atmosphere into the studio: calming, organic, close to what a person focused on sound actually needs. All of it in natural oak, in harmony with nature.

When the studio started recording after installation, the difference was audible immediately. And visible. Neither came without the other.

When the character of a place is part of the instrument

The second project began with a different kind of question. Not “how do we fix the acoustics”, but “how do we give this place a soul”.

The owner of a private recording studio in the United States, working with the design studio Onyx + Alabaster, was looking for something no catalog of standard finishes could give him. Natural character. A pattern that exists only once, and looks nothing like a thousand other studios around the world.

3D PYRAMID: geometry that catches light and breaks up sound

Onyx + Alabaster reached for the 3D PYRAMID panel. The three-dimensional geometry of pyramids in natural oak does something on a wall no flat finish can achieve. Every surface catches light at a different angle, every module carries a different arrangement of grain, and none is the twin of the one beside it.

A wide interior view of a luxury dark-walled home studio featuring a large window wall, a modern desk setup, and a geometric oak wooden panel accent wall.

More than ten square meters of PYRAMID covered the studio wall. But PYRAMID is about more than what you see. The multi-plane geometry breaks up sound waves instead of reflecting them, and the space begins to work acoustically without separate absorption systems turning the studio into something resembling a warehouse.

Natural oak brought a warmth you can feel in the recordings. An artist working at this wall has a living material in front of them rather than decoration. And that changes the way you work.

A good material in the hands of a good designer

This project is also proof of something else. A good material in the hands of a good designer produces a result neither would reach alone. Onyx + Alabaster brought their knowledge of the client and the space. FORM AT WOOD brought the craft and the material. The result: a studio the artist keeps coming back to, because that is where the inspiration is.

Why wood, and why it matters

Every acoustic material absorbs sound. Not every one does it in a way you want to look at for eight hours a day.

Melamine foam is effective and ugly. Mineral wool boards are neutral and dead. HEXAGO, solid wood with precisely engineered perforation, along with the triangular geometry of PYRAMID or the organic waves of CARO MINUS, unites acoustic function with a material that has temperature, history and character. In a space where sensitivity to sound and sensitivity to surroundings go hand in hand, that combination is no luxury. It is a requirement.

We design FORM AT WOOD wood acoustic panels for spaces that cannot afford a compromise, acoustic or aesthetic. A recording studio is one of the contexts where that principle is tested most sharply. But it is not the only one.

You will find more projects where wood solved both problems at once on our case study page.

Designing a recording studio? Let’s talk

Designing a recording studio or a post-production room? Let’s talk. Every space has a different geometry, different challenges and a different story to tell.

And if you want to feel the material in your hands first, order a sample and see how wood responds to the light in your own studio.
